Unbowed Nancy does not fear dismissal however supporters show wrath following derby defeat.
The under-pressure manager insisted he did not fear dismissal, maintaining, “The team is really close to changing our fortunes,” despite edging perilously close to the exit with a comprehensive defeat by their arch-rivals.
A Second-Half Collapse Leads to Derby Defeat
Celtic were in front Rangers at the interval but a collapse after the break allowed Rangers to move level on points with the defending league title holders. Nancy, who was hired from the MLS, has now presided over six setbacks in eight matches.
“There is unity at the club,” stated the manager.
Asked directly about his own future, he responded: “It’s not on my mind. I think about finding ways to aid my players to be good on the fine details.
Supporters' Anger Erupts
The fans displayed their anger – directed at the hierarchy – by protesting at Parkhead. The hierarchy are thought to be considering to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who steered the club during a caretaker period before Nancy was hired, if Nancy departs.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. So this is the reality for the moment. Yet when I say this is the reality, I am not saying that I am a defeatist guy. Not at all. The message is we are on the cusp, imminently close to change the narrative.”
Focus on the Details
He remains focused on the fact his team show good levels for 45 minutes at a time. For instance, but for wastefulness in front of goal they could have been better than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit aside from the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I know that we lost, but I have also to be balanced.
“The level we had at times was really, really, really high. That happened. I could not say that if it was not the case. That is the reason, when it comes to wins, I noted we've seen this before. That’s why I said that we are really close to a shift in fortunes. Currently: small things.”
“I saw a lot of encouraging signs that we did, once more. But now is performing for 90 minutes. My outlook would not be the same. Therefore I firmly believe the team can to turn things around.”
Opposition Reaction Response
Rangers manager was cautious about a championship push in spite of what felt like a huge result. “One match at a time, so we can develop a challenge,” he said. “The faith in the team is immense.”
