The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"Iâm so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
âWe're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,â noted Cappa. âIt feels as if we have to know weâre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.â
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
