The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. âMy sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,â remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. âHe didnât want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,â says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on âone beautiful day,â he received his fatherâs blessing to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot â the club that produced talents including Sadio ManĂ©, Papiss CissĂ© and IsmaĂŻla Sarr â saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were âastonishedâ to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. âThey took me directly to the training centre. They didnât want me from going back to Casamance,â he recalled.
A Landmark Year and European Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, âa year to remember,â which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of ManĂ©. âAdapting was never a problem,â says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyneâs âhumilityâ and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. âIt is a habit that is following me!â he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. âAs soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,â he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. âWe are the favourites â there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own countryâŠ,â he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. âI feel really comfortable here,â he affirms. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize down the line.
âThe pressure is on us â we canât hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley⊠it instills confidence.â
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
