The Japanese Economic Output Declines while Exports Suffer by US Trade Duties

Japan's economy has recorded a decline for the first time in a year and a half, primarily caused by falling exports as a result of newly imposed American trade duties.

G7 Growth Rankings

The Japanese economy stands as the initial Group of Seven country to disclose an GDP decline in the previous three-month period.

As the United States yet to publish its GDP data for Q3 2025, the present G7 growth leaderboard show:

  • The French economy: 0.5 percent expansion
  • United Kingdom: 0.1 percent
  • Canadian economy: +0.1% (provisional estimate)
  • Germany: 0%
  • Italy: 0%
  • Japan: -0.4%

Travel Shares Slump during Political Rift with Beijing

Alongside the economic contraction, Japan is facing an growing diplomatic dispute with China regarding Taiwan.

Stocks in Japanese travel and retail companies have declined sharply after China urged its citizens to refrain from visiting to Japan.

This action by Chinese authorities intensified a diplomatic feud that was initiated by comments from Tokyo's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of deploying forces in the case of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.

The situation caused a wave of sell-offs across Japan's tourism-related stocks.

  • Oriental Land stock fell by 5.7%
  • Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3%
  • The national carrier declined by 3.75 percent

"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and China's travel warning advising against travel to Japan creates near-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.

"Tourists from China represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and tourism services especially at risk."

Economic Contraction Breakdown

Japanese GDP declined by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter, as industrial overseas shipments were impacted by tariffs imposed by the US recently.

Overseas shipments were a key driver of the decline, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.

Previously, the US administration had proposed Japan with a new 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade agreement.

Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.

"Japan's economy was stable in the first half of this year and the latest GDP data showed that momentum is paused temporarily.

I expect Japan's economy to be back on a moderate growth trend going forward."

The US administration has lately recognized the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing duties on food imports including beef, produce, beverages and bananas amid increasing concerns about increasing costs.
