Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
