We are verifying images and video posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
