Crew Member Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
