Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the billionaire proprietor.
